Michael Pflumm, born in the South of Germany (Hechingen/Hohenzollern) first studied music education as well as Jazz and popular music at the University of Music Trossingen. He subsequently completed his vocal studies at the Freiburg University of Music and became a member of the opera studio of the Theater Basel.

After his studies he became a member of the soloist ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg, Theater Bielefeld and the Komische Oper Berlin. Since 2015 he is freelancing.

In recent seasons Michael Pflumm appeared for example at the Teatro alla Scala Milan (Elektra), Opéra National de Paris / Bastille (Moses und Aron), Teatro Real in Madrid (world premiere La ciudad des las mentiras and Moses und Aron), Palau de les Arts Valencia (Elektra), Nationale Opera Amsterdam (Humperdinck Die Königskinder), State Opera Hannover (Schreker Die Gezeichneten, West Side Story), Semperoper Dresden (Toch The Princess and the Pea), Oper Köln (Die Gezeichneten), Bonn (Elektra), Oper Leipzig (Lobgesang), State Opera Braunschweig (Zandonai Giulietta e Romeo, Hubay Anna Karenina, Krenek Der Diktator), Kassel and Saarbrücken (West Side Story), Freiburg (Rise and Fall of the City Mahagonny and Pique Dame), Bremen (Idomeneo) or at festivals like the Wiener Festwochen (Mahler Das Lied von der Erde), the Enescu-Festival Bucharest (Die Frau ohne Schatten and Moses und Aron) and the Musikfest Berlin (Die Frau ohne Schatten).

An advocate for contemporary music and as a guest of the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart he has sung at the Salzburg Festival, in La Monnaie Brussels, Casa da Musical Porto, at the Festival Nous Sons Barcelona, Tongyeong International Music Festival South Korea as well as the Printemps des Arts Monaco.

Michael Pflumm sang with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Radio Symphoniy Orchestra, Deutsches-Symphonie-Orchester and Konzerthausorchester Berlin, with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) in Kattowitz, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow, Klangforum Wien in the BOZAR in Brussels, Collegium Novum Zürich in the Tonhalle Zürich, further appearances with the Jenaer Philharmonie (Das Lied von der Erde), Sinfonieorchester Basel, Philharmonie Baden-Baden, Staatskapelle Halle or Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal and worked with conductors like Sir Simon Rattle, Vladimir Jurowski, Lothar Zagrosek, Philippe Jordan, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Iván Fischer.
